CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW): John McGuire’s victory over incumbent Bob Good in the recounted 5th congressional district republican primary has been confirmed.
Officials across the district worked for nearly 14 hours through most of the day Thursday until about 9:00 yesterday evening, when the last votes arrived at the courthouse. Chief Judge Claude Worrell II officially certified the results of the recount late last night. Out of nearly 63,000 votes cast during the June 18th primary, the former Navy Seal’s original margin of victory was only decreased by 4 votes between the original and recounted totals, 374 to 370.
McGuire was on hand at the courthouse, saying as the results were certified, “I don’t mean to be disrespectful, but we won on June 18.”
Representative Good, head of the House Freedom Caucus, took to Facebook to make a statement after the recount “While I am disappointed in the ultimate outcome, it has been my distinct honor to serve as the congressional representative for Virginia’s 5th District over the past 3.5 years.”
