RICHMOND, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Attorney General Miyares announced an $86 million multistate settlement in principle with opioid manufacturer Indivior for its role in the opioid crisis. Indivior produced buprenorphine-based products to treat opioid use disorder. The settlement, led by a coalition of attorneys general, alleges that Indivior inappropriately targeted its sales to high-risk prescribers and failed to monitor suspicious orders, leading to the misuse of its products.
“The opioid epidemic has severely impacted Virginia families, with pharmaceutical companies playing a significant role. Indivior’s actions contributed to the problem rather than addressing it. This settlement aims to correct that,” said Attorney General Miyares.
The $86 million settlement will be distributed over five years to participating states and will fund opioid addiction treatment, recovery, and prevention programs.
The settlement was negotiated by the attorneys general of New York, Illinois, Tennessee, Utah, and Virginia, in coordination with an executive committee including attorneys general from California, Colorado, Delaware, Georgia, Idaho, Iowa, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, and Vermont.
