Barbara Westerman Newlon passed away peacefully on July 20, 2024, just hours into her 96th birthday.
Barbara was born and raised in Clifton Forge, Virginia. She was the youngest of five children born to Elmer Curtis and Katie Markley Westerman. She obtained an Education degree from Mary Washington University and had a long and varied career as a teacher all over the world before settling in Charlottesville as a guidance counselor at Buford Middle School.
Barbara was a faithful member of University Baptist Church where she sang in the choir for many years. It was there that she met her husband, Howard Newlon, Jr., to whom she was married for 35 years before his death in 2012. Together they enjoyed travelling and were avid followers of UVA athletics, particularly women’s basketball. She particularly cherished her mountain retreat on the Cowpasture River, where she and her family made many summer memories. Her family still cherishes that special place today.
Barbara spent the last fourteen years as a resident of the Colonnades in Charlottesville, where she always brought a smile and a laugh to residents, staff, and family members each day. The family is forever grateful for the loving and attentive care she received during her time there, particularly in the last few months of her life.
Barbara is survived by her daughters, Nancy Newlon Gaines (Ray) of Charlottesville and Anne Newlon Doll (Jamie), of Arlington, VA; five grandchildren, Julie (Jeff), Emily, Katherine (Anthony), Henry and Jack; and numerous loving nieces, nephews, and grand-nieces and nephews.
Condolences may be shared with the family on the tribute wall.
