CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – 2024 is an expanded year for the African American Pastor’s Council Back to School Bash as it’s an entire weekend August 10 and 11. Pastor Alvin Edwards with Mt. Zion First African Baptist Church pre-registration is closed for the Saturday, August 10 backpack and school supplies giveway… but 300 are available to those who have not pre-registered. That’s 10-to-noon at the Ting Pavilion.
Then from 10am-to-2pm Sunday at the Boys & Girls Club on Cherry Avenue, they’re partnering with the 100 Cuts Initiative in partnership with 100 Black Men of Central Virginia offering free haircuts, braids, and styles. There’s also free chicken and waffles from Royalty Eats, pizza from Belmont Pizza, and free sneakers from Brooks Running — in partnership with Prolific Run Crew.
Sentara will be at those locations both days giving free sports physicals.
When asked about the significance of the event, Dr. Edwards emphasized, “We want to make sure that kids go back feeling good with new stuff… It helps parents as well… especially those who are now taking care of their grandchildren”
