RICHMOND, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Following endorsements from Virginia Democrats’ elected leadership, the state’s delegates to the Democratic National Convention have unanimously committed to Kamala Harris for President. Senate Democratic leader Scott Surovell, House Democratic Leader Charnielle Herring, and Petersburg Senator Lashrecse Aird, who all co-chaired the 2020 Harris campaign, mobilized the delegate convention votes.
This comes after U.S. Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine endorsed Harris on Sunday. Kaine told CBS that Virginia’s Democratic leadership is committed to ensuring Harris’s success. A Democratic Party of Virginia release on Tuesday morning confirmed that all 119 Virginia delegates will cast their votes for Kamala Harris at the convention from August 19-22.
UVA politics professor Larry Sabato noted that Harris energizes part of the base. He added that while Democrats still trail, it is not as severe as when Biden left the race.
