CHARLOTTSVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Emmet Street is closed until 9 Sunday night between Bavarro Hall and Contempletive Commons for removal of an old footbridge over the roadway. All pedestrian and vehicular traffic is prohibited from that part of the corridor. Detours are set up at Emmet and Ivy. Pedestrian traffic is being routed up the stairs or the elevator at the Central Grounds garage over to McCormick.

According to UVA Today, the footbridge constructed as part of the Contemplative Commons project replaced the original bridge built in the 1970s. The new span over Emmet Street is compliant with the University’s accessibility standards and goals and is open to the public. Two large machines will remove the concrete and then the steel sections will be hauled away.
