CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Greer Achenbach, Executive Director of Friends of Charlottesville Downtown, shared updates on various city efforts and community initiatives, particularly focusing on the downtown area.

Achenbach mentioned ongoing challenges with homelessness and the efforts to improve the situation downtown. Achenbach noted, “The biggest issue that we’re seeing right now is camping on the downtown mall.” She mentioned a productive meeting with the police chief and downtown businesses, aiming to find solutions and provide support for both the unhoused community and local businesses.

Achenbach highlighted the compassionate approach of the business owners: “It is not that they are heartless and don’t care what happens to people in our community. We very much do. We just think there could be a better solution for everybody.” Friends of Charlottesville Downtown continues to work on initiatives like installing security cameras to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for everyone.

One of the highlights was the success of the Friends of Charlottesville Downtown Express, a popular kids’ train that operates on the downtown mall. Achenbach expressed enthusiasm for the train’s impact: “It is so much more popular than I ever imagined and dreamed that it would be.” She emphasized the need for volunteers to help drive the train, aiming to run it every Saturday morning starting with back-to-school season.

The conversation also addressed “Paint the Town Orange,” an event in collaboration with UVA Athletics to create community spirit before the first home football game. The event includes band performances, cheerleaders, football players, and a window decorating competition among local businesses.
