CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Blood donation is always critically important to supply our local hospitals for patients dealing with regular treatments or experiencing trauma. According to the American Red Cross, summer poses significant challenges for blood donation collection. Vacations and other seasonal activities result in a notable decline in donations, even though the need for blood remains high. Regular donors, including high school and university students who contribute up to 30% of the blood supply, are often unavailable during this time. “Our stable donors sometimes are away from their normal routines. They’re on vacation and most important to the schools, high schools and universities. They’re out, so we no longer have access to that very valuable component.”

He stressed the urgent need for blood to support hospitals like the UVA Medical Center, a Level 1 trauma center, where “the need for blood never goes away and where we simply must provide the blood needs of patients.”

Therefore, the Charlottesville Radio Group is partnering with the local American Red Cross to encourage blood donations with a live broadcast on Monday July 8th, at the Doubletree Hotel on 29 north. The Broadcasters for Blood drive offers incentives for donors, including food from local establishments, a chance to win a big-screen TV, and free passes to the movie Twisters. Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are encouraged to ensure an orderly process.
