CHARLOTTESVILLE (WINA) – City Council meets tonight with a light — but impactful — agenda. We’ll learn about a new strategic plan during the report portion of the meeting at 4 o’clock — that’s before Council votes on it as the last item of the meeting.

Also on the regular agenda, the first reading of a rezoning of 501 Cherry Avenue — a piece of property just west of the Fairfield Inn — for mixed use development by Woodard Properties including a proffer for 60 affordable units as well as space for a grocery store. The Piedmont Housing Alliance will facilitate the affordable housing and will likely ask for funding help down the road from the city. Another proffer requires a minimum of 5000 square feet of the leased commercial space reserved for a grocery store selling fresh produce. No one type of the mixed use development is allowed to exceed 80% of the property’s square footage.

Council doesn’t vote for final approval tonight, but will decide to put it to a final vote at a near-future meeting.
