CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – The American Red Cross is gearing up for a critical blood drive, the “Broadcasters for Blood” on Monday, July 8th, from 7 AM to 7 PM at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in Charlottesville. Terry Atwater, the regional account manager for American Red Cross in Central Virginia, emphasized the importance of donations during the summer, particularly around the 4th of July holiday when the need for blood increases due to heightened travel and potential trauma incidents.

Atwater noted that regular donors, including high school and university students who contribute up to 30% of donations, are often unavailable during summer vacations. “Our stable donors sometimes are away from their normal routines. They’re on vacation and most important to the schools, high schools and universities. They’re out, so we no longer have access to that very valuable component.”

He stressed the urgent need for blood to support hospitals like the UVA Medical Center, a Level 1 trauma center, where “the need for blood never goes away and where we simply must provide the blood needs of patients.”

The “Broadcasters for Blood” drive offers incentives for donors, including food from local establishments, a chance to win a big-screen TV, and free passes to the movie Twisters. Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are encouraged to ensure an orderly process. For more information or to schedule an appointment, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS.
