CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – The upcoming presidential debate is generating significant buzz as political analysts weigh in on the strategies and preparations of the candidates. Mary Kate Carey, a Professor at the University of Virginia and former speechwriter for George HW Bush, shared her insights on the subject during a recent interview. Carey now leads the Think Again campaign, a bipartisan initiative aimed at encouraging young people to engage thoughtfully in political discourse. 

Carey discussed the importance of debate preparation for both President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump. She emphasized that Biden needs to focus on his stamina, as Trump’s experience with long rallies and press interviews gives him an edge in terms of endurance. “I would say he’s going to have to focus on his stamina because President Trump… has been doing these long rallies where he gives a 45-minute to hour-long speech.” Carey also highlighted the significance of policy issues over personal attacks, advising Biden to present a positive agenda for the next four years rather than engaging in name-calling. 

For Trump, Carey suggested a strategy of restraint and focus on key policy areas such as the economy, the border, and crime. “That’s where the gold mine is.” She noted that Trump’s recent behavior, characterized by temperance and a focus on issues, could work in his favor if maintained during the debate. 

The debate, set to take place on CNN tonight, Thursday June 27th, and will be the first before the conventions and early voting, making it a potentially pivotal moment in the election cycle. Both candidates’ performances could significantly influence voter perceptions and the overall outcome of the election.
